The Siamese Cat Characteristics:

Siamese cats are very affectionate. They are in constant need for human’s attention and even demand it. They are also good around children, other cats, and even dogs.

Siamese cats are very intelligent. Siamese have great communication with humans, they tend to get very attached to their owners, and they don’t like being ignored.

Siamese cats are very extrovert. They sometimes make very loud noise to get attention. Because of this noise, the Siamese cat was tagged with the nickname "Meezer".

Siamese cats are very jealous. They are very loyal to their owners.

The Siamese Cat Types:

Traditional Siamese- Also called "Apple-Head" because of the shape of his head. Body and face are round, heavy bones.
Classic Siamese- His body is medium-size, wedge-shaped, his body is more elongated.
Extreme-Wedge Siamese- His body parts are much longer: head, body. legs and tail. His name was given to him because his head resembles the shape of a triangle.

About Declawing

If you own a cat (or a few…), you probably have some scars all over your body from all the scratching your beloved cat gave you as gifts. What you need to do is to train your cat from a very young age that scratching is something he should do only on the scratching post. You can read more about training in the post: "Training Your Kitten".

Cats, like humans, are different from one another, and you may find it difficult to train your cat. What I ask of you, is to read this post carefully before you give up on training and decide to declaw your cat.

What is declawing?

Declawing is actually a surgery to remove the claws and the tissue surrounding them. It doesn’t sound so nice, isn’t it?

What are the consequences?

Cat are predatory by nature, and the claws exist so that they will be able to defend themselves, and to mark their territory.
Cats with no claws should not be allowed to go outdoors, unless being supervised!
Though some cats may climb well even after the declawing, it can hurt their ability to do so.
Some cats may feel bitter when they find out they no linger have their claws.

Important to know:

Even if you decide to declaw your cat, he will still try to scratch things, it is his nature.
Declawing is illegal in some countries.
Some vets resist declawing and will not perform that kind of surgery.

Alternatives:

Soft plastic covers for the claws that are available in the vet’s clinic. They last about a month and can not be removed.
As I said at the beginning, I am not in favor of declawing, and my offer is to train your cat the best way you can. And, well, no one is perfect…

Common Health Problems in Cats

Cats, like humans, have health problems, so I gathered them all in one place because these health problems are the most common in cats, and if you detect the problem in its early stages, you can prevent complications.

Diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes is a result of insufficient insulin production.
Type 2 Diabetes is a problem of the body to handle the insulin in an effective way. This type can also indicate an impending problem of other diseases or drugs that hinder the natural process in which the body handles insulin.

The symptoms: your cat may show are weakness, lose of appetite and as a result weight loss, increased thirst, vomiting, urination and as a result, dehydration.

The treatment: the treatment can include several things such as a change in diet and a weight supervision, oral medications, supervising the insulin and glucose levels and even insulin injections.

In any case, you should consult your vet, only him can detect the type of Diabetes your cat is suffering from and how to treat him.

Overactive Thyroid:

When the Thyroid glance gets enlarged, it produces excessive amounts of hormones and in most times, what causes the excessive activity is a tumor on one or on both tumor glands. In most cases, the tumor is benign and only in 2-5% is malignant.

The symptoms: diarrhea, frequent vomiting, irritability and nervousness, frequent vomiting, increased appetite or thirst and unexplained weight loss. If two or more of these symptoms appear, you should take your cat to the vet.

The treatment: radio-iodine treatment, anti-thyroid medication and surgery.

FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease):

It is actually an inflammation of lower urinary tract, and the inflammation can be caused from bacteria, viruses, urine retention and from a lot more reasons. It is a very painful and fatal disease and it is important to treat it as soon as you notice your cat is showing any signs of it.

The symptoms: appetite loss or frequent licking of the genitals, blood in urine, frequent or difficult urination, urination in inappropriate places.

The treatment: catheterization, antibiotics and even surgery.

Cats can pivot their ears 180 degrees.
The cat’s brain is similar to human’s brain then dog’s brain.
Cats have 290 bones and 517 muscles in their body.
A female cat can have 2-6 kittens in one litter.
Cats see in colors.
A cat takes 20-40 breaths per minute.

Behavior:

When a cat is kneading with his paws it means he is happy.
If your cat’s tail is quivering, know it’s an expression of your cat’s love for you.
If your cat’s tail is thrashing, know that your cat is angry and the best thing you can do is to move away from him.
Cats who were not spayed or neutered tend to be much more aggressive then those who were.

Cats need five times more Protein then dogs do, so if you also own a dog, make sure your cat will eat the kind of food that is made especially for cats.
Chocolate is harmful to cats.
Cats are sensitive to the lactose that exists in milk, it can cause them diarrhea.
A cat can not taste sweet.

The Persian Cat History:

It is believed that the long-haired Persian cat as we know today is actually one of the mutations of the Felis Libyca, a short-haired cat that can still be found in Asia and Africa, and that the mutation developed due to the adaptation of the Felis Libyca to the high and cold plateaus of Persia (also known as Iran). He was brought to Europe in 16th century, maybe even earlier.

The Persian Cat Characteristics:

The Persian cat has a very relaxed temperament, he is laid-back, quite silent but is ready to play, gets along very well among other pets and is very tied to his owners. He is also very smart and does notice if he is being left alone for too long.

The Persian cat is characterized by his coat, which is very long and thick. He also has a large and round head with large and round eyes, a very flat nose, small ears, a short tail and short legs.

The Persian cat can come in any color: Black, White, Red, Cream, Lilac and Chocolate and he can also come in any mark: Tabby, Shaded, Smoke, Partial- Color, Calico, Bio- Color, Himalayan, Silver or Golden.

The Persian Cat Grooming:

Brushing- because the Persian cat has long and thick coat, it will need daily care to prevent neglect: during winter time, one brush a day will be just fine, but during summer time, his coat must be brushed twice a day. It is also important because of the hairball and the dirt that he is exposed to because of the coat.

Bathing- if your Persian cat doesn’t go to beauty competitions, you can bath him once a month, but if he does, it is recommended to bath him every two weeks.

Breeding- if you want to breed your female Persian cat, she should be over a year old, and if you want to breed your male Persian cat, he should be over 14 months old.

Important to Know:

The Persian cat is not physically structured for a life outdoors.
The Persian cat needs to get used to being brushed and groomed from a young age, it is necessary in order to keep him in good shape.
If you choose to raise a Persian cat, it is very important to make sure you have sufficient time to take care of him and to groom him.
The Persian cat is exposed to some health problems, especially the ones with an extremely brachycephalic head type. The health problems are mostly problems that effect the sinuses and breathing.

The Sphynx Cat History:

You may be surprised to know that the Sphynx cat was brought to the world by a domestic cat in Toronto, Canada in the year 1966. He was born hairless and is, in fact, a natural mutation. The Sphynx cat is also known as "The Canadian Hairless".

The Sphynx Cat Traits:

The Sphynx cat is a very intelligent, curious and energetic cat, and prefer humans attention. They also show a lot of affection, especially to their owners, although they get along great with cats and even with dogs.

The Sphynx Cat Appearance:

The Sphynx cat is not totally hairless, although he appears to be, and he may have some hair on his nose, toes and tail. If you touch his body, you may feel it’s like a peach texture or like a Chamois leather. You can find a Sphynx cat in every color and pattern, and the pigment on the body is actually the fur color that the Sphynx would have had if he had fur.

The Sphynx cat is a strong cat with a medium size body, his development is very good, with very few health problems. The male’s body is bigger then the female’s.

The Sphynx Cat Grooming:

Bathing- because the Sphynx cat has no coat, his body oils can not be absorbed by the hair and it causes them to build up on the skin. That is why a Sphynx needs to be bathed once a week.
Going Outdoors- because of the absence of hair, the sphynx cat should not go outdoors un-supervised. It can cause the skin damage in the form of sun burns, just like humans get, and also, because of their friendly and curious nature, it can be dangerous for them.
cuddling- a sphynx cat tend to suffer more from the cold, because he has no hair, and in order to warm him self, he tend to cuddle a lot under the bedclothes, or by humans, cats and even dogs body temperature.

Important to Know:

For people who are allergic to cats- although the Sphynx cat hardly got any hair, it doesn’t necessarily mean they can be in the same environment with this breed, it all depends on how sever the allergy is.

The Ragdoll Cat History:

The ragdoll cat was created in the 1960’s by Ann Baker, a breeder in California.
Ann bred a domestic longhaired white female she found in her neighborhood to other cats she raised or found. Ann selected individuals with the criteria she wanted for her breeding program, and that is how she created the Ragdoll breed.

The Ragdoll Cat Traits:

The Ragdoll cat is a very calm cat with very relaxed temperament, and is known by his affection to humans, more than other cats breeds. He enjoys humans companionship and likes to play with children, and is very careful not to expose his claws or his teeth while playing. A Ragdoll cat is also very friendly toward other animals, but because of his non-defensive nature, he should never be allowed to go outdoors.

The Ragdoll Cat Appearance:

You can identify the Ragdoll cat very easily because of his fur colors: the body’s color is brighter then the color of the face, legs, tail and ears. A Ragdoll cat reaches his full fur color after two years, and his full body weight and size after two more years. His weight range is 4.5-9 kg.

A Ragdoll cat can have one of six different colors: blue, seal, lilac, chocolate, red or cream, and can have one of three different patterns:

Pointed- when the ears, nose, tail and paws have only one color, and he has no white on his fur.
Bicolor- tail, paws, chest, lower part of the body white and an upside-down "V" mark on the face also in the color white.
Mitted- paws, belly and chin white. It’s also possible for a Ragdoll to have a white line on the face.

The Ragdoll Cat Grooming:

Although the Ragdoll cat has a long hair, his fur is relatively easy to manage: a once in a week combing is enough, and bathing is hardly ever needed.

A First Aid Kit For Your Beloved Cat

You can never know when you will need to give your cat a first aid treatment, and you don’t want to be unprepared if something will happen. With very little time, you can prepare a first aid kit and put it in a safe and accessible place so if your cat will need an initial treatment, you’ll be able to help. Of course, the initial treatment do not replace taking him to the vet.

Things required for the first aid kit:

Thermometer - the digital one is better.
Blanket
Sterile gauze pads
Scissors
Forceps
Cotton wool
Muzzles
Self-adhering bandage
Emergency ice pack (keep in the freezer and use it only when it’s wrapped in a towel).
Sterile saline gloves
First aid guide
Flashlight

Medicine required for the first aid kit:

Hydrogen Peroxide to disinfect infections and wounds.
Eyes drops or antibiotic cream for the eyes.
Antiseptic cleaner.
If your cat is taking medications on a regular basis or has a disease, you can add extra medication to the first aid kit.

Important!

Don’t forget to refresh the kit every once in a while and check the medications expiry date. You can also add important phone numbers such as the vet’s number.

In any case, do not use the first aid kit as a replacement for your cat’s vet.
