A temperature of a healthy cat should be 100.5-102.5°F or 38-39°C. It’s very important to know how to measure the cat’s temperature so it won’t cause your cat any damage. The supply you need: human rectal thermometer (a digital one is better because the finite temperature will be displayed on the screen), Vaseline or KY jelly to lubricate the thermometer and alcohol with pads to disinfect the thermometer when finished.
To make it easier for you and comfortable for your cat, you can follow the
steps below:
- It’s recommended to assist a second person that will keep the front of the cat immobile by holding the cat under the arm or by grasping the skin at the base of his neck.
- After lubricating the thermometer and the cat is ready for the examination, lift the cat’s tail gently and start to insert the thermometer into the rectum and twist it from side to side. Insert the thermometer only one inch inside.
- If you are using a glass thermometer, take it out after two minutes to check the temperature.
Don’t forget to give your cat a treat…
