It probably happened to you to. After a long day has come to an end, you fall on the couch with your fluffy cat beside you ,one minute he is cuddling and indulging your touch, and one other minute , with no short notice, he feels like stuck in his sharp teeth into your flesh.
So why do cats really bite? There are several reasons for why cats do so: because they are afraid, because they are not feeling well or even just because they don’t want to be touched anymore (don’t take it personally).
- Cats are predatory by nature- don’t forget that cats came from the wild, even if now days cats are domesticated and live in human environment. Their instincts remained the same.
- Cats don’t like to be touched every where- back legs, pows or chest are out of limit. Very important: if you feel your cat’s reaction to your touch in a particular place is extreme, you should take him to the vet for a check up.
- Pay attention to what your cat is trying to tell you- it’s best for you to recognize his body language: tail lashing, growling, shifting his body position or ear flicking are all signs you should not ignore.
- A need to play- it’s possible your cat is just bored and wants to play with you.
What can you do to stop your cat from biting?
- Train your cat not to bite- if your cat is still a kitten, it’s best if you start to train him not to bite while he is still young. Kittens usually bite because they see it as a play, so even if it’s tempting, and I know it’s fun to feel his small teeth, it won’t be when these teeth will become sharp.
- Find your cat an amusement- Give your cat some games he can play with. It will be good for him, because that way he will be able to blow off steam, and it won’t be on your body. Strings, feathers, fishing pole and balls with a loosen mouse doll in it will be good.
- Play with your cat- you can conduct a few play sessions with your cat to lessen her boredom. Two or three sessions will reduce the biting.
